Alice, a young Manhattan woman, has been sheltered in her world of private schools and corporate high-rises. After falling down the "rabbit hole" she gets lost in the hidden subterranean world of the homeless of New York. Originally frightened and disgusted by the characters she encounters, she comes to find empathy and compassion for them as she realizes they are not all that different from herself.
